Cosmic microwave background anomalies viewed via Gumbel Statistics
We describe and discuss the application of Gumbel statistics, which model extreme events, to WMAP 5-year measurements of the cosmic microwave background. We find that temperature extrema of the CMB are well modelled by the Gumbel formalism and describe tests for Gaussianity that the approach can provide. Comparison to simulations reveals Gumbel statistics to have only weak discriminatory power ...
متن کاملStatistics of cosmic microwave background polarization
We present a formalism for analyzing a full-sky temperature and polarization map of the cosmic microwave background. Temperature maps are analyzed by expanding over the set of spherical harmonics to give multipole moments of the two-point correlation function. Polarization, which is described by a second-rank tensor, can be treated analogously by expanding in the appropriate tensor spherical ha...
متن کاملCosmic microwave background anomalies in an open universe.
We argue that the observed large-scale cosmic microwave anomalies, discovered by WMAP and confirmed by the Planck satellite, are most naturally explained in the context of a marginally open universe. Particular focus is placed on the dipole power asymmetry, via an open universe implementation of the large-scale gradient mechanism of Erickcek et al. Open inflation models, which are motivated by ...

The energy content in radiation from beyond our Galaxy is dominated by the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), discovered in 1965 [1]. The spectrum of the CMB is well described by a blackbody function with T = 2.725 K. This spectral form is one of the main pillars of the hot Big Bang model for the early Universe. The lack of any observed deviations from a blackbody spectrum constrains physical p...
متن کاملCosmic Microwave Background
We asses the contribution to the observed large scale anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation, arising from both gravity waves as well as adiabatic density perturbations, generated by a common inflationary mechanism in the early Universe. We find that for inflationary models predicting power law primordial spectra |δk| ∝ k, the relative contribution to the quadrupole anisotropy ...
